Spiritus Pizza Opens PTown's 2019 Season Today With Their Annual Free Slice for All

Get a steaming-hot, free, opening day slice at Spiritus today, beginning at 1 PM.
If you look closely, you can see the steam rising from this hot pepperoni pizza, fresh out of the oven at Spiritus,
At this time of year, with the door open almost constantly, it's always a little chilly inside, hence the steaming pizzas lining up in the front window as each one waits just a moment to be sliced and handed across the counter.
There will be dozens of folks at a time queuing up for their first Spiritus slice of the season. Today's the day, so get to Spiritus for a free slice of that legendary thin-crust pizza. Starting at 1 PM, Spiritus will offer a free slice to everyone who comes by, ushering in the new season as they do every year on March 28th.

Thick slices of pepperoni are a Spiritus hallmark.
Spiritus got it's start in 1971 at 193 Commercial, a little building across the road from the joint we've all known and loved since 1978. That's when Jingles and his merry band decided to buy the old optometrist's office at 190 Commercial Street, moving their pizza operation (and by then, ice cream, too) across the street.
This spot has been the home of Spiritus ever since, with their unique pizzas, strong coffee, premium ice creams, and a "gallery" that gives a variety of local artists a chance to display and sell their work.
Spiritus is widely known as a late-night gathering spot. At one time crowds there late on a summer night could number around a thousand people, with the street closed to cars, and police officers milling through the enormous crowd, which often resembles the after-Carnival crush of wall-to-wall revelers caught up in the party.
A lot of folks call these pies their favorite PTown pizza. There's something about that nice, thin crust, with a good bit of whole wheat flour mixed into the dough, along with the generous amount of toppings, all of which make a Spiritus pizza different from any other in Provincetown.
Be sure to get there this afternoon for a free slice of this iconic PTown treat, heralding the true arrival of spring at the tip of Cape Cod.

Spiritus Treats Provincetown to Free Pizza

You can't beat free pizza on opening day at Spiritus in PTown.
Woohoo! Spiritus opens tomorrow, March 27th, and celebrates, as usual, with free pizza all day long! Opening day every year is the last Thursday of March, and everyone in town is invited to stop in for free slices of their famous, delectable pizza pie with the ultra-thin, whole wheat crust.
For more than 40 years Spiritus Pizza has been luring folks down Commercial Street for a slice. The place got its start in 1971, on the other side of the street, before finally settling in for the duration
at 190 Commercial.
Spiritus will be open at least by noon tomorrow, likely till about 5 or 6 o'clock. It's that time of year when it's a little hard to know exactly what everyone's hours will be, since it all depends on how many customers show up every day. For now, you can call Spiritus at 508 487-2808 to find out what time they expect to be opening and closing as the town gets busier day by day.
Soon, though, the rhythm of the season will have Spiritus opening early every day for their excellent, strong cup of coffee to go along with their continental breakfast, and they'll stay open late for the infamous crowds that gather after the bars close down for the night. And don't forget about their juices, three brands of gourmet ice cream and frozen yogurt in a long list of flavors, and my favorite frosty treat, the absolutely killer espresso shake.
Even though the calendar says it's springtime, today's snow and extreme winds deny it. But stepping into Spiritus will go a long way toward leaving the winter behind. Yay!

Twisted Pizza Reopens… Can PTown Spring Be Far Behind?

Twisted welcomes the spring, and visitors, to Provincetown.
There's more to eat on Commercial Street these days, at least Thursdays through Sundays, when Twisted is open to serve you thin crust, New York style pizza, their specialty, along with the occasional deep dish Sicilian pie, fresh salads, subs, wings and ice cream. From noon till closing you can get delivery, too, even ice cream. Dial 508 487-6973. It's easy to remember; Most of the town is still 508 487 - just add the NYPD (That's New York Pizza Delivery.)
They have a variety of subs on the menu (or create your own) and great salads, but my favorite here is the Meatball Parmigiana Hero Roll, a hot sandwich baked in the oven with hand tossed pizza dough wrapped around meatballs, tomato sauce and cheese. Ask for a little extra sauce to dip your sandwich in as you eat it.
It's great to see Commercial Street come back to life every spring, with restaurants and shops slowly reopening one by one. It's nice to have more choices when we're hungry, too. And even if you're not hungry, Julie invites you to stop in, at 293 Commercial Street, and just say hi. Visit Twisted's Facebook page and scroll down for a very funny video featuring pizza and the Dalai Lama.

Pizza Hits the Spot Year-Round, Now With Lunchtime Delivery From George's

A mushroom slice from George's Pizza always warms me up.
Open year-round, they now offer delivery from noon till 10 PM daily.
It was past noon, about 22 degrees, and windy to boot,
so I needed to warm up a little.
Nothing sounded better than a hot slice of pizza fresh from the oven.
In the summertime Provincetown offers some 90 restaurants, coffee shops, delis and takeouts where you can sit down for a meal or grab a quick bite to go, but winter leaves us with just a handful of year-round eateries, and in the off-season there's not always something to eat nearby.
So when I walked into George's Pizza (275 Commercial Street) and ordered my favorite mushroom slice, I was happy to find that they had just begun offering delivery service during lunch hours in addition to their usual evening delivery service. Now you can get salads, hot or cold sandwiches, lasagna, soft drinks, and of course, pizza, brought right to your door from noon till 10 PM. For a delivery charge of $2 you can gat a meal delivered anywhere between the Provincetown Inn and the North Truro police station.
You can see in the photo above that I like my pizza sprinkled with all the condiments: crushed red pepper, oregano, garlic and a bit of parmesan cheese. If you remember to ask for these seasonings, George's will tuck them into your delivery order.
Of course, you can drop in for a meal at a table or at the full bar, where you can watch sports or other TV events, play video games or chat with the assortment of Townies that can randomly be found here at any time of day. Or call George's Pizza at 508 487-3744 for delivery day or night.

What's New? Sandwiches at Twist'd Sisters

I was having a salad at Twist'd Sisters one day while I was writing a post for this blog and I heard someone order a sandwich. They had never had sandwiches on the menu before, so I determined to come back soon to try them. I went back another day and told Devon that I had come to try a sandwich, and I asked him what I was going to have. He thought for a second and told me I would have the Italian. They call it a Broadway. It's made with ham, mortadella, salami, provolone, red peppers, black olives, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and an herbed vinegar and oil dressing. It was huge, like an Italian sandwich with a side salad added in.
It was served open-faced, because you probably couldn't get the top half to fold over the bottom half and stay put. This sandwich barely fits on the plate.  Once I got the top half folded over (and it took both hands to hold one half of this sandwich together) and took a couple of bites, I couldn't put it down for fear it would explode. And I didn't want to put it down anyway, because it was a great sandwich. All the veggies and garnishes worked really well together with the meat and cheese, and the dressing was perfect. I took quite a while to eat it, clutching together half of the sandwich at a time. Sandwiches come with a bag of Cape Cod potato chips, too.
Click this link to find the Twist'd Sister menu. You can print yourself a coupon from their website I want to try the Harlem sandwich next. It's made with roast beef, bacon, melted cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion and BBQ sauce. I'll have to make sure I'm really hungry first. There are 7 choices including a vegetarian option, and there's a build-your-own where you choose a meat and a cheese and your own list of condiments, garnishes and dressings from a list of 15 choices.
Of course, you can get New York style pizza, salads, chicken wings or hero rolls, which are a bit like a calzone, with pizza dough wrapped around veggies, a chicken cutlet, cheese steak or meatball parmigiana, which is my favorite. Ask for a side of extra tomato sauce to dip it in. Now serving beer and wine. And, of course, ice cream for dessert.
Visit Twist'd Sisters at 293 Commercial Street, or call 508 487-NYPD (just remember New York Pizza Delivery, or dial 6973) to pick up, or have your order delivered from noon till midnight. Open 11 AM till 2 PM in season.
